Operating principle of decentralized combined heat and power plants: When electricity is generated, heat is produced as a by-product, which is directly used, resulting in an overall efficiency level of up to 87 percent. Electricity and heat are supplied directly to the immediate locality, so distribution losses are very small.

The plant is the result of close cooperation between MTU and MDE. MDE incorporated the complete package, with an MTU 16V 4000 L61 gas engine, generator, control system and heat recovery system as the main components.
