MTU's rail PowerPacks are compact underfloor drive units incorporating engine, cooling system, gearbox, generator and other sub-assemblies. A diesel particulate filter can be integrated in the silencer.

Diagram of MTU diesel particulate filter: The untreated exhaust gases with their particulate content penetrate the catalytically-coated walls of the filter. At temperatures above 350°C, the soot particles react with the residual oxygen to form carbon dioxide.

The untreated exhaust gases flow from the PowerPack engine into the MTU diesel particulate filter. The catalytically-coated filter, which was co-developed by MTU, removes more than 95% of the diesel particles from the exhaust.

MTU Series 4000 Railengine

MTU's new Series 4000 rail diesel engines for locomotives are available as 8, 12, 16 and 20-cylinder units and produce between 1,200 and 3,000 kW. (Pictured: 16V 4000 R43 rail engine).
