Main sponsor of Formula Student Germany design competition

Company employees produce components for racing cars

Friedrichshafen, June 6, 2013. Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions is to be the main sponsor of the Formula Student Germany international design competition at Hockenheim for the sixth time. From 30 July to 4 August 2013, 115 higher education teams will be competing against each other with racing cars they have designed themselves. Among them are several teams sponsored by Tognum. Tognum provides financial support for the university teams. Tognum staff also produce components and provide input in the form of practical advice. Tognum also sponsors the “Most Innovative Power Train” award.

Two of the teams supported by Tognum – Ravensburg University of Cooperative Education, Friedrichshafen Campus, and Ravensburg-Weingarten University – are from the Lake Constance region. Further afield in Germany, the group sponsors the teams from Munich Technical University, Stuttgart University, the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and Brunswick Technical University. But sponsorship does not stop at national boundaries, as Graz Technical University and Oregon State University are also beneficiaries. The last named takes part in the Formula Student competition in cooperation with Ravensburg University of Cooperative Education.

“We want to continue offering our clients the best solutions. That is why we are always looking for upcoming engineers with a passion for technology and international teamwork. The students who take part in Formula Student are distinguished by precisely those qualities. With their knowledge and experience, they are the sort of young people we are keen to recruit,” explains Jörg Schwitalla, HR and Integrity Director at Tognum AG.

The Tognum Group's core operation, MTU Friedrichshafen, has been developing and producing highly durable, low-emission engines and complete propulsion and energy systems for applications such as ships, trains and hospitals for over 100 years. Its developers are also working on alternative propulsion technologies such as gas engines and hybrid systems.

“As distinct from other motor-sport competitions, Formula Student is not necessarily won by the fastest car but the team with the best overall score in the areas of design, vehicle handling, energy efficiency, financial planning and marketing,” elucidates Tim Hannig, Chairman of Formula Student Germany. “In other words, precisely the aspects that will be called upon in the students' subsequent professional lives,” Hannig expands. The international university teams in Formula Student compete against each other in various disciplines with vehicles powered either by internal combustion engines or electric motors.

The design competition has its origins in the USA. But there are now competitions in Italy, Japan, Brazil, the UK, Hungary and Austria as well. As the rules are virtually identical apart from some very minor differences, the teams can take part in races all over the world.

First company child day care center opens in Friedrichshafen

‘MiniTu’ chosen above 700 other suggestions

Friedrichshafen, 3 June 2013. The first company child day care center has opened in Friedrichshafen. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum now provides close-to-work childcare in Prielmayerstrasse 13 in Friedrichshafen. All 40 of the crèche and kindergarten places have already been taken up by the children of company employees. They are looked after by 14 childcare staff at premises covering a total of 1,500 square meters of floor space. To find a suitable name for the establishment, a poll of the workforce was organized. A committee chose the name ‘MiniTu’ from the 700-plus suggestions submitted.

“The high demand for the day care places shows us that the investment of roughly five million euros was worthwhile,” said Executive Board member for Personnel and Integrity, Jörg Schwitalla, at the press conference in the newly established day care center. “We want to be an attractive employer both for our present staff and for prospective employees – and nowadays more than ever that includes a family-friendly approach. We decided on the company day care center to be able to meet the needs of staff with young children.”

The flexible opening times of 7:00 to 18:00h help staff to manage their work-life balance. MiniTu is closed on no more than ten days a year and so is also available during holiday periods. The educational concept has been worked out together with the operator of the facility, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. The overall concept places particular emphasis on incorporating the daily routines of family life. For example, a catering manager provides freshly cooked meals every day. And the children are positively encouraged to help with the preparation. They can also play in the garden, develop their creativity with painting, or explore and discover technology in their own workshop area. In keeping with the international character of the company, a special feature offered by the center is the opportunity for bilingual education. A British playleader talks to the children only in English. A parent-and-child area allows mums and dads to stay with their children during the familiarization phase or if the child is ill.

“By providing the child day care center we can enable mothers and fathers to return to work sooner. MiniTu is an important competitive factor for Tognum in the attraction of the location,” concluded Jörg Schwitalla. At the Open Day on 8 June all company staff and anyone else interested will have the chance to look around the new day care facility from 10:30 to 16:00h.

New element in strategic health management

Friedrichshafen, May 14, 2013. Even for those who really enjoy their work, it always involves elements of stress. Sport is a sensible and necessary way of balancing out everyday work-based stress and, of course, it increases our sense of general well-being. Employees at Tognum and MTU Friedrichshafen are able to find that balance right outside the factory gates because the specialist for propulsion and power solutions opened the company’s own gym. The facility offers staff the chance to exercise under the supervision of qualified trainers and to take part in a range of fitness programs. The gym is located in the basement of Tognum´s new day-care kindergarten in Prielmayerstraße.

“Having our own gym means we can decide where the focus should be in our training programs. Our statistics show that musculoskeletal problems, in particular, are on the increase and so we have concentrated our concept and the programs on offer, in this area,” explained Ingo Metzer, head of HR at Tognum AG. The activities available range from individual workouts on endurance and strength-enhancing equipment and various courses involving spinning and relaxation, to 30-minute courses during lunch-breaks. “Our short membership contracts and low monthly subscriptions are designed to make it easy for our employees to do sport before or after work,” added Metzer. And along with the `pain´ will be the extra `gain´ of being able to enjoy the activities together with one´s co-workers. “The program will be rounded off by activities for special target groups such as shift workers. We want to encourage our co-workers to get into the habit of physical exercise,” said Dr Claus-Jürgen Gros, company medical officer at Tognum. The gym will be operated in cooperation with external service provider Integion, which specializes in in-house fitness programs for companies.

Tognum has been involved in health promotion within the company for many years. Its coordinated concept focuses on sport and exercise, healthy eating, medical treatment and prevention, and the work-life balance as well as health and safety at work. Friedrichshafen, April 19, 2013. The Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Tognum AG, Joachim Coers, at his own request, will hand over his position to his deputy Dr. Ulrich Dohle as of July 1st, 2013 and will pursue personal goals. The Supervisory Board of Tognum AG regretted the decision taken by Coers, which they have accepted, and thanked him for his exceptional dedication and commitment in the past nine years. In its meeting on April 19th, the Supervisory Board elected Dr. Dohle unanimous as new Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Tognum AG and at the same time extended his contract to 31 December 2015.

Dr. Dohle joined the Tognum Executive Board with responsibility for Technology & Operations (CTO) in 2009, after spending many years at Robert Bosch GmbH in a variety of managerial, executive and international positions. Since 2011, he has been the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board. In his new position as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO, in addition to the typical duties and responsibilities of the CEO, such as Strategy and Corporate Communications, Dr. Dohle will also be responsible for Research & Development and Quality Management, which are part of his current area of responsibility. He will hand over his other areas of responsibility as CTO, Operations and Purchasing, to another member of the Executive Board, Jörg Schwitalla, who will then be responsible for the extended Board Division of Operations, Integrity and Personnel. The company does not intend to appoint an additional Chief Technology Officer. The new allocation of responsibilities will subsequently result in a reduction in the size of the Tognum Executive Board from five to four board positions.

Joachim Coers joined what was then MTU Friedrichshafen in 2004. He was involved in the company’s carve-out from the Daimler Group and, as managing director with responsibility for finance, prepared Tognum’s IPO. He has been the Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board during the almost six years in which the company has been listed on the German stock exchange and Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO for the last year and a half. Since Tognum‘s takeover by Rolls-Royce and Daimler, he has been preparing the company for operational collaboration with the two owners. Following the completion of the squeeze-out in March 2013 and Tognum’s delisting from the stock exchange, Joachim Coers will now hand over his position as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO to his colleague Dr. Ulrich Dohle as at July 1st, 2013.

Friedrichshafen, April 2, 2013. Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, recently won a contract worth over €20 million for the remanufacturing of underfloor rail drives. The contract partner of Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH is Veolia Verkehr GmbH, leading private operator of regional services in Germany’s bus and rail system.

The basic agreement with Veolia Verkehr GmbH provides for the overhaul over the next 4 years of around 360 Powerpacks based on Series 183 and 1800 engines. During the remanufacturing process the Powerpacks are completely disassembled, cleaned, and tested and then put together again using either brand new components or components that have been re-conditoned. Parts such as the engine, gearbox, cooling system and generator for onboard power are overhauled by MTU in conjunction with the original manufacturers. A re-furbished Powerpack does not usually contain its own original parts, but identical parts which have already been re-worked. That way, MTU keeps the vehicle downtime as short as possible for the customer. Where necessary, some components are replaced by brand new parts. In the remanufacturing process, the throughput time at the works is ten days in total. The overhauled Powerpacks that then pass through the factory gates are as-new, correspond to the state-of-the-art, and are covered by the same warranty as brand-new Powerpacks.

For vehicle operators, having a Powerpack remanufactured offers cost advantages over purchasing a new unit, provided that the downtime to be coped with is kept short. Moreover, it makes a long-term contribution to sustainability by reducing power consumption and the use of natural resources.

Friedrichshafen, March 25, 2013. Tognum, the specialist for propulsion and power solutions, has won an order from railcar manufacturer Alstom covering 307 Powerpacks. The new railcars powered by the compact underfloor drives from MTU will be circulating on what is known as the Dieselnetz SüdWest network (south-west diesel rail network) from December 2014. The Powerpacks will be deployed in Alstom railcars of the type Coradia LINT 41, 54 and 81. They comply with EU Stage IIIB emissions legislation and deliver an output of 390 kilowatts. The regional railcars, which will circulate in the German federal states of Rheinand-Pfalz, Baden-Württemberg and Saarland, are operated by the private transport company Netinera along with Deutsche Bahn.

The Coradia LINT rail vehicles of type 41, 54 and 81 are powered by two, three or four Powerpacks respectively. These are based on 6-cylinder Series 1800 horizontal inline engines from MTU. Alstom will be installing 207 Powerpacks in new rail vehicles for Netinera and another 100 for Deutsche Bahn. The horizontal configuration of the engines makes them highly suitable for use as underfloor drives in rail vehicles, and their compact design also keeps the overall weight of the railcars down, enabling low fuel consumption at high power outputs. The Powerpacks are equipped with selective catalytic reduction for exhaust gas purification to reduce nitrate emissions. Furthermore, through the use of in-engine technology, particulate emissions have been reduced by around 90% of the maximum level allowed by the previous EU Stage IIIA regulations. Combined with innovative engine management, a 5% saving can be made on diesel fuel consumption and CO2 emissions also lowered.

Alstom and Tognum have already joined forces successfully on regional railway projects in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.

2012-2014: Investment of more than one billion euros in plant expansion and R&D

Publication of Annual Report 2012

Friedrichshafen, March 5, 2013. The specialist for propulsion and power solutions Tognum intends to invest more than one billion euros by the end of 2014. This amount exceeds the volume that Tognum specified in a cornerstone paper together with Daimler AG and Rolls-Royce plc two years ago. Approximately €600 million of the total investment will flow into each of research and development and long-term capital expenditure. “We intend to further pursue our growth strategy in the future and are convinced that our strategic investments will pay off,” stated Joachim Coers, CEO of Tognum AG, at today’s annual press talk in Friedrichshafen.

Tognum will invest approximately €140 million in the expansion of its plants in Europe, America and Asia between 2012 and 2014. One focus of the investment will be on the plants in Friedrichshafen. “We are clearly committed to our site in Friedrichshafen for research and development, production and assembly,” explained Coers. At Plant 1 in Friedrichshafen, a new factory is currently being built for the processing of piston rods. For the coming years, a new building is planned there with an air-conditioned and energy-efficient measuring room, new development test facilities and an energy line to supply the test facilities with electricity, water and hot water. In total, these planned investments in Friedrichshafen will amount to approximately €60 million between 2012 and 2014. The company plans to invest approximately €90 million in the new plant in Stargard, Poland, until the project is completed.
€42 million is to be invested in the plant by 2014; construction is scheduled to start in autumn this year.

For the plant in Aiken, USA, Tognum will establish new development test facilities in several phases until 2015 for a total of €40 million. From 2012 until 2014, investments of €21 million are planned. In Aiken, Tognum assembles MTU Series 2000 and 4000 engines. In addition, Tognum started production of major components for those series as well as cylinder heads for the Series 4000 in 2011. In the same year, a new administrative building was erected in Novi, and a training center and spare-parts logistics center were built in Greater Detroit.

In Singapore, Tognum is currently constructing a new logistics center similar to the existing logistics centers in Überlingen and Brownstown. Furthermore, the company plans to move into a new building in Singapore for sales, administration, development, training and workshop. These investments will total approximately €17 million between 2012 and 2014.

“Our goal is to develop all the relevant sales markets in the core regions of Europe, Asia and America,” stated Tognum’s Executive Board Member for Technology & Operations, Dr. Ulrich Dohle, on the occasion of the press talk. “In the medium term, the plant expansion enables us to prepare for the planned volume growth.”

The year 2013 is still subject to considerable uncertainty due to global economic risks. “But we assume that the economic situation will stabilize in the second half of 2013,” explained CEO Joachim Coers. “On this basis, we anticipate a stable development of revenue compared with last year. In view of the currently foreseeable less favorable business mix and volatility during the year, significant efforts will be required to maintain the level of earnings achieved in 2012,” stated Joachim Coers. “But in the medium term, we continue to see ourselves on a growth path.”

“The market for engines in the lower power range offers great growth opportunities,” reported Executive Board Member for Sales, Dr. Michael Haidinger, at the press talk. “We are already faced with strong demand for our pre-series engines. When the new emission legislation comes into force, we will utilize the resulting market dynamism to further enhance our strong market position.”

The Annual Report 2012 can be downloaded from www.tognum.com in the “Investors” area.
